The Way of Harmonious Spirit

Aikido, or the 'Way of Harmonious Spirit' (Ai-Ki-Dō), is a modern Japanese martial art founded on principles of blending with, rather than fighting against, an opponent's energy. At Rickmansworth Aikido Club, you'll learn effective self-defence techniques while improving your fitness, flexibility, and mental focus in a supportive, non-competitive environment.

What is Aikido? The Way of Harmonious Spirit

The word Aikido is made up of three Japanese characters that perfectly describe its philosophy:

Ai (合): Harmony, Unification, Blending.
Ki (気): Energy, Spirit, Life Force.
Dō (道): The Way, Path, or Road.

A Martial Art Without Competition
Unlike many martial arts, Aikido has no competitive element—there are no tournaments or matches. This non-competitive approach is central to its peaceful philosophy. Instead of focusing on defeating an opponent, training is centered on blending with and redirecting an attack's energy, rather than clashing with it. This creates a safe, cooperative learning environment where both partners are actively helping each other improve.

The Focus on Non-Aggression
The core purpose of Aikido is not to inflict harm, but to resolve conflict peacefully. We teach students to:

Blend: Move with the attacker's energy, not against it.
Redirect: Use rotational and spherical movements to unbalance an opponent.
Control: Apply joint locks and throws that allow the practitioner to gain control without necessarily causing injury.

This is why Aikido is often described as "dynamic meditation." It trains the mind and body to remain calm and centred even when faced with sudden, powerful opposition.

The Three Main Benefits of Practice
Beyond self-defence, practicing Aikido offers deep personal rewards:

Physical Well-being: Increase your flexibility, balance, and core strength through safe and fluid movements.
Mental Clarity: Learn to stay relaxed and focused under pressure, helping you manage stress and anxiety in everyday life.
Cooperative Learning: Join a supportive community where humility, respect, and mutual welfare are core values.

Meet Our instructors

Sensei Andy Squires

There was life before Aikido but I find it difficult to recall. My first experience of the art was when Yasuhisa Shiodo Sensei was teaching at Watford Leisure Centre. He performed a magnificent technique on me on my first day and I thought if I learned that well enough I could return the compliment. I was soon hooked.

I have been fortunate to learn from some of the best in the business since 1979 and have made some good friends who are good to train with to this day. Travelling to different countries to share and learn experiences particularly in England, Germany, Spain, Canada and an amazing 5 weeks in Kofu City, Yamanashi, Japan with Sensei's Paul Stephens and Eve Stauffer at Takeno Sensei's Dojo, who was wonderfully assisted by Chiemi Nakagawa Sensei.

It has been said that Aikido is a martial Art for women and old men. I now fit into one of these categories and realise that you don't need to be young and fast to practise Aikido.

Sensei Rick Janko

I started training in 1983. My instructor was Dave Thompson who trained under Mr Yueh. The reason I have trained for so long is that I find however much I train there is always more to learn.

Sensei Mike Abel

I've been practising Aikido for 20+ years with my Sensei Andy Squires. He trained me from white belt  to black belt. It has been a long road and when I reached Shodan, the pain and hard work was all worth it. I've trained with some of the best practitioners of Aikido in the world (Takano Shihan, Joe Thambu, Paul and Eva Stephens, Chris Johnston and Robert Mustard are just a few).

Aikido is a way of life, you are constantly learning, revaluing and honing your techniques. I now assist Sensei Andy in his lessons and I hope that my experience and knowledge can go on to help teach new and existing students this beautiful martial art - AIKIDO

About Rickmansworth Aikido Club

Our Vision: The Path to Peaceful Strength. At Rickmansworth Aikido Club, our vision is simple: to create a dedicated space where individuals can explore the profound benefits of Aikido—not as a means of aggression, but as a practice for self-improvement, centeredness, and harmonious conflict resolution.
We believe that true strength comes from balance, courtesy, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Our club is built upon the principles of mutual respect, cooperation, and safety.

A Welcoming Environment: We pride ourselves on having a warm and inclusive dojo (training hall) atmosphere. We welcome adults and older teens, offering a supportive space to learn and grow.

Non-Competitive Training: As a non-competitive martial art, ego is left at the door. Every practice is a cooperative learning session where senior students assist beginners, and everyone practices with the goal of mutual advancement.

Safety First: Our curriculum emphasizes safe falling and rolling (Ukemi) from day one. This protective training allows students to practice dynamically and safely, building confidence without fear of injury.
